it looks like the following commit: | * Show complete English names in C locale. Closes: Bug#734690. didn't *quite* improve the situation; quite the contrary in fact. Now: - we're getting "C" instead of "English" on the first d-i prompt. → Not quite an improvement. - we're failing at automatically picking "France" if "French" is selected as a language, getting "North America" instead. → Same comment. - ditto for the keymap selection. → Same comment.
