The util-linux included in even debian-unstable is several revisions out of date (2.20.1 vs 2.24.1). Among other things, 2.20.1 lacks blkdiscard (added sometime during 2.23?), a tool that can be used to safely issue trim commands to block devices (drive/partitions). The release notes cover a wide range of bug fixes include improved translations, stability, data integrity and memory leaks. While checking what other distributions offered I noticed that gentoo's package database notes: "Recent releases no longer contain GPL-3 code." https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/v2.21/v2.21-ReleaseNotes https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/v2.22/v2.22-ReleaseNotes https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/v2.23/v2.23-ReleaseNotes https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/v2.24/v2.24-ReleaseNotes https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/v2.24/v2.24.1-ReleaseNotes
