Oh, I don't particularly mind how this gets fixed, as long as it
eventually does. As hinted in my initial mail I think having
libapt-pkg-perl provide whatever interfaces allowing for this would
be the ideal solution. In which case I think it would make sense to
file a bug report on libapt-pkg-perl requesting whatever interface is
needed, possibly another one on libapt-pkg if it does not provide the
underlaying interfaces and chain-blocking each of those up to this bug
report, and possibly retitling and unwontfixing this one.

I think you might be in a better position to file the other bug reports
(if they have not been filed before), as you know what you might want
to see provided, otherwise I could try to file them distilling what
you've mentioned here, although I'm not sure that might be ideal. :)
