Forget my previous question, you have to have fonts-texgyre
installed.

But do you have:
        /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-texgyre.conf
and a link to the above file as
        /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-fonts-texgyre.conf

They *should* be there and I have them and with them xelatex works.
I just tried it.
