Hello, unfortunately, I could not reproduce this on neither etch nor lenny, nor in any current Debian release. Can you provide an example with all 8-bit characters escaped to avoid any confusion due to character conversion? What I see here is: $ printf 'GAB\xc3\x8a\x7Fs' | file - -b -i text/plain; charset=ebcdic Or, assuming input was supposed to be ISO-8859-1: $ printf 'GAB\xc3\x7Fs' | file - -b -i text/plain; charset=ebcdic "EBCDIC" doesn't look sane either, but that's a different story.
