okay found what may likely be the issue.
should maybe be moved to separate bug?

if ethernet cable is unplugged icedove loads fine no issues.
can read old mail etc...

due to OS upgrade used webmail and changed password.
I have now removed all passwords, but still freezing system on password 
dialogue.

ideas please

There I wrote some things how you can collect informations to give some
helpfull logs etc.
But I don't believe at all that Icedove is the real problem, but this
will be more clear with some logs to see what's going on.
