I don't think there really is a good way. You could specify alternatives for known versions.... But do you really need libvala? The only thing that seems to use it is the upstream configure.ac (To figure out vala version, instead of just parsing `vala --version` or whatever). None of the grilo packages seems to actualy depend on it.... So maybe just fix the configure.ac upstream and get rid of it?!
