That's probably because almost nobody uses the software volume control 
provided by xmms's alsa plugin. Alsa implements some software volume 
control by itself, which means that the software volume control provided 
by xmms's alsa plugin is useless. But although it is useless, I still 
think it is broken.

This bugs has been ignored by the alsa maintainer for 1 year. Do you 
consider that bug automagically vanish when ignored long enough? I wish 
this were true...

Please don't. If you don't want to fix a bug, you can tag it wontfix, 
but don't pretend that a bug is fixed when it really is not. And also 
please note that I proposed to update the patch I sent when submitting 
the bug report.
