* What led up to the situation?
With a removeable disk mounted, after using it as I like, I click the small
"Eject" icon to the right of the disk in Thunar. This "selects" the disk and
attempts to mount and display its contents, which obviously prevents it from
being ejected!
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
If I go to a neutral location in Thunar, say, my home directory, then RIGHT-
click the removeable disk and select "Eject volume," it seems to fare better,
as it does not attempt to display its contents. However, even that fails much
of the time, saying the disk is busy (but I imagine that's a separate issue).
Opening the gnome-disk-utility, selecting the removeable disk, then its mounted
volume, then clicking "Unmount," then clicking "Power down device for safe
removal" seems to work consistently - I wish that thunar's "eject" button
followed a similar sequence. At other times I have had some success unmounting
a removeable disk that refused to unmount by using the "sync" command in the
terminal, so perhaps a that is a relevant step to add to the sequence.
