Just tested this with ejabberd from jessie (2.1.11-1).

It seems like the problem may be threading/SMP-related:

Maybe my User Mode Linux installation is not able to provide the necessary 
information to the Erlang virtual machine when configured to use system 
threads.

And perhaps this is a distinct bug from the one originally reported (even 
though the directory ownership problem did exist in 2.1.10-4+deb7u1). If so, 
I'll gladly see it renamed or split into another bug, if appropriate.
