Severity: wishlist

Dear ftpmaster,

For implementing automatic detection fo sourceless file particularly minified
javascript, I need some clarification about correcting sourceless file.

They are two schools on the archive:
- some repack the origin tarball adding the missing source to it
- some add it to debian patch on subdirectory debian/missing-source

What is the correct use ?

We have some chat on #debian-qa about it today. A definitive answer his welcome.

Bastien

(21:57:49) broucarie: I will try to detect javascript minified without source
automatically. What is the usual directory for carrying source under debian/ ?
Do you think it is worthless to open a bug against Debian
Developer's Reference best pratice ?
(21:57:56) broucarie: nthykier: ^
(21:57:59) broucarie: paultag: ^
(21:58:18) paultag: source in debian?
(21:58:29) nthykier: for carrying the source that upstream is missing?
(21:58:39) paultag: that needs to be in the orig.tar.gz
(21:58:45) paultag: we distribute the orig.tar.gz on it's own
(21:58:58) paultag: needs has a repack.
(21:59:21) nthykier: paultag: are you sure that requires a repack? I seem to
recall hearing that it was sufficient to put it in the debian part
(21:59:24) broucarie: paultag: do you have reference ?
(21:59:37) paultag: we distribute the orig.tar.gz
(21:59:43) paultag: it's on the ftp archive on it's own
(21:59:52) paultag: if we have sourceless files, that's not great
(22:00:11) paultag: some cases it's not legally an issue (MIT/Expat), but it is
a DFSG issue
(22:00:40) nthykier: paultag: are you sure that will survive the "d-d" test?
(22:00:54) nthykier: (the part of requiring a repack)
(22:01:03) paultag: d-d test?
(22:01:25) nthykier: paultag: as in, can you post it to debian-devel without
getting lynched?
(22:01:41) paultag: debian-devel isn't the one doing the work :)
(22:01:51) paultag: it's an ftp-master policy, I'm just a minion
(22:01:58) paultag: I don't get to set policy yet :)
(22:02:20) nthykier: paultag: I am sure there are people who'd consider
"stabbing someone" as work :P
(22:02:37) paultag: bah, there's already a list of people who want to stab me
(22:02:41) paultag: "get in line"
(22:03:10) broucarie: paultag: Will open a bug against debian-policy for
clarifying it, with X-Debbugs-CC: ftpmas...@debian.org
(22:03:44) paultag: policy doesn't set this
(22:03:51) paultag: they don't decide DFSG freeness.
(22:03:54) paultag: ftp-master does
(22:03:58) paultag: but I'm not an ftp-master
(22:04:18) broucarie: paultag: A footnote on policy will really help
(22:04:27) paultag: policy can feel free to ask ftp-master explicitly
(22:04:35) paultag: but policy won't set this on their own, that's not right
(22:05:24) broucarie: paultag: so what is the process to improve the situation ?
(22:05:34) paultag: ask ftpmaster@ to clarify
(22:05:48) paultag: but as I understand it, the proper way is to repack the
tarball
(22:08:11) olly: not sure I totally buy the "we distribute the orig.tar.gz"
argument, since you can fetch any file by itself from sources.debian.net (yes,
I realise that's .*NET*)
(22:11:18) jcristau: and we never ship the .orig without the .diff
