Goto file/save as, and choose PDF as the output format. Viewing the PDF (tested in a variety of PDF viewers) does not display the italicized text in italics.
For some reason, this error appears to be corrected when you have the msttcorefonts package installed. I suggest that abiword should support exporting italics as text in its default font or at least depend or recommend on the msttcorefontspackage.
