That is *wrong*, as shown in the same thread the same error appears also when *not* using babelbib.sty ... how can you propose a fix in a file that is not even loaded? As one can check this seems to be a bug either in babel.sty or in spanish.bdf, I don't know. But the solution provided there is not a solution at all. This bug should be reported to the original authors of spanish.bdf and babel. Since this is not a Debian specific bug, please report it with detailed descriptions how to reproduce on an uptodate system to the upupstream authors of babel and spanish for babel.
