I'm looking, but don't see the problem (though I can guess it refers to
the subdirectory value).

Taking the configure options from the Debian package, I did a
test-build with current code, and 20130727 (which match except for
the version line).  As those files differ only with the libdir
(comparing against my Debian/testing machine, which has this package
version installed).

Perhaps an example of the good/bad ".pc" files would help me focus on a fix.
