I think Moritz's point is that the project should get to the point where it is perceived as ok for the non-linux ports to lose things like gnome once it entirely depends on linux-only features (lots of alternative desktops xfce, lxde, etc. still of course remain). To make that ok, the % build requirement for kfreebsd/hurd will probably need to be reduced.
