For your information, there exists now another option: Instead of using
systemd as init system, you can install systemd-shim that works with
sysvinit-core and upstart.
However I think the option still is missing in deconf...
And I guess that won't change, as these options were removed upstream,
see [1]. You might want to try systemd-inhibit. For example
systemd-inhibit --what=handle-lid-switch gedit
opens gedit and as long as gedit is open, closing the lid will not
suspend the machine.
