The current approach is to act more like switch, and intentionally selects the default unless the user takes specific action, which is to run the tools manually via "dpkg-reconfigure init-select", which is more automated. I'm not sure if I want to set up more grub entries since the number of kernels to select from will grow exponentially as (number kernels)^(number of inits). But I'm open to alternative ideas.
