Well, I'm really embarrassed that five months have passed since this discussion. I had checked a while ago to find that s3cmd was not on mentors.debian.net anymore and that the status of this bug report was unchanged. Now there's a beta release of 1.5.0 that should be packaged. Are you still interested? If you're interested in sponsorship, I can try to be more responsive, or I can adopt the package.
