I've been trying to resolve this issue and, after seeing the strace, I tried to disable DRI to see if it had any effect.
Since I disabled DRI in the xorg.conf file (graphics card Device section) Openoffice.org started working normally. I also tried reenabling DRI and the problem appeared so I think DRI was the cause.
