I recommend looking into the fs2ram package, to fix all such issues at
once, without requiring any change in Debian. I'm personally using
this line in /etc/fs2ram/fs2ram.conf, and it has been working great
for me since more than a year:

tmpfs            /var/log        keep_file_structure     -               tmpfs
