However we, as package maintainers, don't always have time to fix all more or less important bugs in oldstable. It's sometimes hard to find an appropriate balance of our efforts between supporting oldstable/stable on the one hand, and working on the next version of Debian on the other hand. In this specific case, perhaps you could try backporting apt-cacher-ng from Wheezy for Squeeze. This might be the simplest way to solve the software error you're facing. Eduard: it's not the user's fault if we're shipping buggy software in a Debian distribution that is still officially supported. Assuming the user is otherwise happy with running oldstable for some reason, suggesting a full OS upgrade to fix a bug in one single package seems needlessly dismissive to me.
