would you mind checking if this is still the case with the versions currently in unstable? I'm unable to reproduce the issue on my (fairly substantial) collection of music, and I haven't found any obvious commit in the mpc source since 0.19 looking like a fix. This may well have been solved on the mpd side since 0.15.12, though, so before spending any more time on this it would be good if you could reconfirm the issue.
