do you have try to start without any extensions activated? Mostly some of the extensions are going mad and produces a high CPU load. Please visit the manpage for Icedove to find out how to do that. If possible turn on the debugging console (for JS) with "Crtl + Shift + J" to see what script is producing errors. If Icedove isn't starting correctly at all please create a log of the activity/crash from icedove [1].
