this is also discussed in GRASS bug #1430 (#2085 was a dupe), https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/ticket/1430 The trunk version of this fix has been tested on big-endian AIX, and the 6.4 change linked above has been tested on ppc64 running Fedora.
