Yes, I agree. Can you still scroll the console back (using shift-PgUp)? If you can it is not completely hung. Using the rescue mode I referred to, enable bootlogd in /etc/default. Then reboot, then go into rescue mode again. Then the directory /target/var/log should have files boot, kern.log and syslog.
