does simply changing the order of the tables really fix the problem?
my guess is that this has something to do with you running mysql-5.0,
which has become some stricter syntactically speaking. i know that
upstream is aware of this and will probably be releasing patches or
a new version sometime in the near future to address this.
in any case, if it does fix the problem i have no problem applying
the patch in the meantime.

not within cacti that i know of, i find in my experience the poor error
reporting in general is one of the application's weakpoints.
