gnome-terminal sets some environmental variables. I'm not sure if they
have any real effect.

I made a backtrace a few days ago, but I can't remember where I put it.
Anyway, it looked like a problem in glib, and I traced the problem to an
unmarked dependency of glib. I had libglib2.0-0 and libglib2.0-bin
installed at version 2.36.4-1, and libglib2.0-data installed at 2.33.12
+really2.32.4-5. Upgrading libglib2.0-data to a matching version solved
the problem. It also seems to prevent the other unrelated crashes that
weren't easily reproducible.
