The cause for this is:
(pbuild-20096)root@aranym:/ # strings -n 2
/tmp/buildd/patch-2.7.1/src/patch|grep -w 'ed$'
ed
ed
In short, the string "ed" occurs twice, not just once.
Please allow for this, for example:
[ "$(strings -n 2 src/patch | grep -w 'ed$' | uniq)" = "ed" ]
