Does this mean that in order to run a 2.x server working with the above

Yes, for the packaged transports you have to have the 1.x server to run them. Both the 1.x and 2.x servers can run on the same host and service the same domain (with the transports servicing their own subset). The 1.x server (running the transports) would then connect to the 2.x server and make the transports available.

IMO, the above description would imply that the transports are provided
for this very server (jabberd2).

I'm open to suggestions on rewording it.

Isn't this also a problem that should be solved? (Or at least documented?)

I don't see it as a problem and didn't think it was unclear from the existing information. The transports depend on the 1.x server as they need it to run and from my point of view nothing in the 2.x documentation (or package) indicates that the transports can run under it.
