[Resending to the bts as my mail to pkg-gridengine-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org is not being handled and I don't like waiting so long.]
Hi [Please keep me in CC in replies, I am not subscribed to the list] As I am trying to get rid of lesstif2 in Debian [LESSTIF], I was looking into doing an NMU on bug 714661 [MOTIF], which requests replacement with motif. Normally, this would have been a rather trivial change which has been done in Ubuntu already [UBUNTU]. However, in Debian it is blocked by bug 701446 [FTBFS]. Luckily that bug points to a patch, great. Then I noticed the other serious bug 709852 [POSTINST] and as it is simple I could fix that too. Furthermore I noticed the request for help [HELP]. After this rather long introduction, let's get to my points/questions: 1. I got the impression from some responses on the list and in the bts that removal of gridengine from Debian is considered. Would that be better as a whole for Debian, or is that just driven by the lack of upload possibilities of the current people involved? If the latter, see point 4. 2. I only have access to one laptop. Can I still test this package properly? What would I need to do? What testing do you consider useful? 3. Can somebody explain me how (step by step) to get git to give me a decent directory layout? I expect the standard layout where I can see upstream code with the debian packaging in the ./debian subdirectory. I do not understand the git layout and gave up. But I rather like git and want to use it. 4. If the above three questions are answered satisfactory, I am willing to help with the packaging of gridengine (not that I use it, but I like the concept and popularity of this package shows it deserves some love ;) ). I feel I must say however, that my skills and knowledge of c are rather poor. So I can focus on the packaging stuff, but others would have to be responsible for bug fixing and the like. Last disclaimer, my first prio is to get rid of lesstif2.
