It's hard to know without looking, but I'm certainly happy to take a
look.

I've been working on some improved consistency checks in the database
backend, but rather slowly I'm afraid.  Meanwhile if you were able to
use a build of xapian-core configured with --enable-assertions that
might catch things going wrong sooner, which would likely help track
this down.
