OK, let's wait for a decision from the apt developers (Michael and/or others) on what could be done on the libapt-pkg side (apart from documenting Proxy-Auto-Detect, which is already on its way to land in the apt.conf(5) man page). Depending on their decision, I will see if something needs to be modified in apt-listbugs and what... Just to recap: the ideas that were hypothesized for possible modifications on the libapt-pkg side are • APT could set the http_proxy environment variable to the discovered proxy (proposed by Michael): I agreed that it would be useful (except that it would not help when apt-listbugs is invoked directly by the user). Another drawback I've just noticed is that http_proxy is overridden by Acquire::HTTP::Proxy, while Acquire::HTTP::Proxy-Auto-Detect overrides Acquire::HTTP::Proxy : this implies that when both the options are set, apt-listbugs would use the proxy specified by Acquire::HTTP::Proxy, but APT would instead use the auto-detected proxy; this would result in a quite surprising behavior... • apt-config could implement a 'virtual' configuration value to be queried in order to find out which proxy is used by APT (proposed by me): this would help, since a little modification for apt-listbugs would make it more or less "future-proof" with respect to proxy setting mechanisms See message #32 <http://bugs.debian.org/726597#32> for details. Please do not misunderstand me: if the apt developers consider all the possible libapt-pkg modifications unreasonable or unjustified, they obviously may decide to not do anything on the libapt-pkg side. In that case, support for Acquire::HTTP::Proxy-Auto-Detect could be implemented directly in apt-listbugs. -- http://www.inventati.org/frx/frx-gpg-key-transition-2010.txt New GnuPG key, see the transition document! .....................................................
