FTR, the “bug” is still present: processing the example with
pdflatex(1) results in:
LaTeX Warning: Command \textperiodcentered invalid in math mode on input line 6
To note, however, is that Latin-1 183 (= U+00B7) is MIDDLE DOT,
while in maths, U+22C5 (DOT OPERATOR) seems more apt. I do not
know for sure if it’s a good idea map one to the other.
