Hal is completely dead and shouldn't be used anymore. My guess is, that it is broken due to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=705489 -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
