Package: qemu-kvm Version: 1.1.2+dfsg-6 Severity: important Dear Maintainer,
I have just started using kvm on this system, and twice in the last couple of days the VM (though not the qemu console) became unresponsive and use of the host CPU maxed out. The first time useage was consistent with 2 cores at 100%; the second time 1 core. * What led up to the situation? invoking kvm with sudo kvm -cpu pentium3 -smp 2 -hda /dev/sunflower/corn_vdisk -m 2G -soundhw hda -display sdl -vga std -boot order=c -net nic,macaddr=12:34:56:00:00:01 -net tap Host hardware is 64 bit, 4-core (each with 2 hyperthreads) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1245 V2 @ 3.40GHz running Wheezy amd64. 16G ram. The first time I booted of a virtual CD with the Lenny installer. I walked the installation and rebooted. I did some tweaks to the system and installed additional packages. While in aptitude I started typing a package name to search when the VM became unresponsive. This used 2 CPU's until I stopped it. It might be relevant that the virtual disk has a partition managed by LVM, and provides some encrypted volumes. The second time I started the system, did more work, and left it overnight. Late afternoon on the following day it hung up, using one cpu. I was doing nothing in the VM at the time (there was an ssh session, as well as the console). The failure seemed to coincide with the start of CPU intensive activities on the host system. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I restarted the VM and let the virtual file systems recover from a dirty shutdown. For the second failure there was error information in the console; I have attached a screen capture. There didn't seem to be any trace of it in the logs of the VM when I restarted. * What was the outcome of this action? VM back up, though apparently not reliably. * What outcome did you expect instead? The VM just worked. Comment: I'm not sure I need to emulate a 32 bit PC; I'm doing it to match the dead system I'm trying to recover as closely as possible. I found this in the host logs, though I believe these are associated with bringing the VM back up rather than its failure: Sep 26 17:45:40 tempserver kernel: [27824.056938] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): tap0:
