OK, so wxwidgets2.9 is currently in NEW, and heading for experimental in preparation for a wxwidgets 3.0 release which looks like it should finally happen soon. Upstream are aiming to release the first release candidate for 3.0 on 2012-09-29. In 2.9 and 3.0, upstream now default to enabling __WXDEBUG__ (which is the feature which we enable in the 2.8 -dbg packages), so the -dbg packages there just contain debugging symbols, which addresses this bug fully there. My plan is to attempt to migrate everyone onto wxwidgets3.0 for Jessie, and I'm looking to focus my energy on that. So I'm going to mark this bug as "wontfix" for wxwidgets2.8 now.
