So there has since been a thread on the debian-dpkg list: https://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2013/04/msg00017.html resulting in a spec proposal which has been written up here: https://wiki.debian.org/BuildProfileSpec which after https://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2013/08/msg00011.html was expanded to cover both possible syntaxes. We'd really like some feedback from the dpkg maintainer on what we should do next, and which syntax to update the patches for.
