I missed this bit, but it needs a response:

For an NMU, you must use dgit clone, not git clone.  (Or dgit fetch
and then manually switch to the right branch.)  dgit checks the
archive, which is obviously necessary.  And using dgit clone will
leave you on the right branch by default.
