Zero out whichever signature is incorrect.  IIRC, mke2fs was fixed at some 
point to wipe old signatures to prevent this sort of thing.

It breaks gparted, one must use cfdisk instead. It is a perfectly good
ext2 partition with some residual junk there...

So what would you recommend the user to do to clean it up so he can use parted?
