Yes, this falls under the category which I call "color management system". This is an extensive topic and it will need some time to study before you get a sufficient understanding of the subject. In any case it exceeds by far the responsibilities of a core image codec.

Yes, but they didn't care to provide a SIMPLE mechanism for storing wide gamut colors for common image interchange. IJG now closes this gap, that is our distinguished responsibility.
