Subject: gnome-packagekit: No multiarch support in gpk-install-local-file in
Debian 7
Bcc: weaver <fgou...@free.fr>

Package: gnome-packagekit
Version: 3.4.2-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

One of the big new features in Debian 7 is multiarch support. However,
right-clicking on a package for a non-native architecture (typically a
32-bit package on a 64-bit system) and picking 'Open With Software
Install' fails with the following error:

  Failed to install file
  Unknown error. Please refer to the detailed report and report in your
  distribution bug tracker.
  More details:
    Package has wrong architecture, it is i386, but we need amd64.

Here is how to reproduce this bug:
 * Download http://fgouget.free.fr/bugs/testdep.tar.bz2
   This is a small archive that contains a set of test, empty, Debian
   package files along with their source.
   (run ./build to rebuild them)

 * Assuming you have a 64-bit system, run:
     gpk-install-local-file ~/testdep-allowed_1.0-1_i386.deb
   (otherwise pick the amd64 one)

 * Click on 'Install'.

Note that this works fine with gdebi. Also the same problem happens with
the other multiarch and non-multiarch package types. From the set of
test packages one can also reproduce this with
testdep-foreign_1.0-1_i386.deb, testdep-same_1.0-1_i386.deb or
testdep-sarch_1.0-1_i386.deb.

Debian 7 currently offers no upgrade for gnome-packagekit. Fortunately
Debian Testing has gnome-packagekit 3.8.2 which supports multiarch
packages and where this works. So it would be nice if it could be moved
to Debian 7. Otherwise regular users will have one chance in two of
getting an error(*) when trying to make use of multiarch.

(*) Depending on whether they choose 'Open With Software Install' or
    'Open With GDebi Package Installer'.
