For what it's worth, this bug is documented on the offical Spamassassin bug tracker at:
http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=4594 The workaround suggested in the entry is adding a "--round-robin" parameter to the spamd commandline (which enables the traditional preforking method). I added this to my /etc/default/spamassassin file and the problem has gone away. Luke Reeves
