I actually just applied the patch proposed by Daniel who created this bugreport.
"dmsetup resume" is necessary when the bug is encountered, but the patch by Daniel prevents it from happening.
IMO the root cause is the bug in LVM that I referenced in my previous post. schroot just happens to suffer from the bug because it uses LVM. The workaround in Daniel's patch is actually described here:

I'm not really familiar with the internals of devmapper or lvm do I cannot comment on that.
