Hi, I just ran across the same problem.
After upgrading to version 1.8-2 dvgrab told me: raw1394 - failed to get handle: Permission denied. After giving myself rw permissions for /dev/raw1394 dvgrab seems to work perfectly fine. And now dvgrab 1.7-1 works as well. So, make sure you have sufficient permissions for /dev/raw1394.
