Why bother Debian maintainer with this if the "problem" is not
specific to Debian at all?  I don't see how that benefits anyone -- we
will never fix it downstream, and all it is causing is duplicated
effort in bug handling and frustration.

Dan, although I find this suggestion of yours to be legitimate that's
really counter-productive to report it to Debian. I have well over 200
bugs in my queue and I'm not sure if I can ever afford to prioritise
issues like this. Please consider bringing such issues to upstream
attention yourself.
