Package: python-imaging
Version: 1.1.7+2.0.0-1
Severity: important

The new python-imaging package comes with Pellow, and try do provide a
compatibility for old scripts. But it does not work:

>>> import Image
>>> Image.open("file.png")
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/PIL/Image.py", line 2020, in open
    raise IOError("cannot identify image file")
IOError: cannot identify image file
>>> from PIL import Image
>>> Image.open("file.png")
<PngImagePlugin.PngImageFile image mode=RGB size=40x40 at 0x25690E0>

It makes the transition harder than to do nothing, since it is complex
to debug this issue.

The common "recommended" way to check if PIL or Pellow is installed is
to try a "import Image". Since this does not work on Debian, do you have
a way to run a simple test?

Regards,

Florent.
