This has been running for a long time now, and I've been avoiding scilab as a
result. I've tried changing locale/LANG etc, but to no avail.

Is this a clue?

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /usr/lib/scilab/bin/zterm -f fixed

(zterm:7724): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_context_load_fontset: assertion
`pango_font_description_get_size (desc) != 0' failed

(zterm:7724): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_fontset_get_metrics: assertion
`PANGO_IS_FONTSET (fontset)' failed

(the same output occurs whatever follows the -f)

The font on the resulting zterm is actually quite nice, but I can't get it to
happen within Scilab without hacking installed files, which is a Bad Thing.

Setting different hinting with dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig makes no
difference.

Debian unstable
scilab 3.0-14
