I'm usually working with KDE; I noticed that XMMS was working in Gnome, so my thoughts went to the old problem with GTK themes... by selecting the GTK 'default' theme (gtk-theme-switch) XMMS starts successfully. This is probably the same reason for many other oddities, such as xine dying after a right click of the mouse...
