I have tried both apt-get and aptitude and while I can upgrade it in apt-get and aptitude but it's not without cost. See :- $ sudo apt-get install xfdesktop4=4.10.2-2 xfdesktop4-data=4.10.2-2 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: xfce4-utils The following packages will be REMOVED: libxfce4ui-utils task-xfce-desktop xfce4 xfce4-appfinder xfce4-session The following NEW packages will be installed: xfce4-utils The following packages will be upgraded: xfdesktop4 xfdesktop4-data 2 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 5 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 1,582 kB of archives. After this operation, 1,492 kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n Abort. $ sudo aptitude install xfdesktop4=4.10.2-2 xfdesktop4-data=4.10.2-2 The following NEW packages will be installed: xfce4-utils{a} The following packages will be upgraded: xfdesktop4 xfdesktop4-data 2 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 1,582 kB of archives. After unpacking 2,609 kB will be used. The following packages have unmet dependencies: xfce4-session : Breaks: xfce4-utils but 4.8.3-2 is to be installed. libxfce4ui-utils : Breaks: xfce4-utils but 4.8.3-2 is to be installed. xfce4-appfinder : Breaks: xfce4-utils but 4.8.3-2 is to be installed. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Keep the following packages at their current version: 1) xfce4-utils [Not Installed] Leave the following dependencies unresolved: 2) xfdesktop4 recommends xfce4-utils Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] q Abandoning all efforts to resolve these dependencies. Abort. So as can be seen in both the situations xfce4-utils comes back .
