Better still, you install as local user (after changing the group id, say) below /usr/local/lib/site-library. That is how people use R: some packages from Debian, many more packages directly installed into local libraries. I have one other package where the ABI changes with major releases. It only has two (2) depends, and the hardcoded ABI/API version is a total pain. I will not do this for R where we have ~ 150 dependend packages. AFAIC our problem is, if I may, that some maintainer groups let their r-cran-* packages get disconnected from upstream and never rebuild. That bugs me a lot more than what is a non-issue (ABI breakage of R maybe once every four years; and R is a pretty tangential package in Debian as a whole. The status quo is fine.
